Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question?
We may have the answer here.

  • Check-in: 2pm - 6pm (or later by arrangement)

    Check-out: 11am

  • The cabin sleeps up to 2 people in a super king-size bed. There are skylights above the bed but electronic blinds block out light in the mornings.

Full linen, towels, robes and bedding are supplied. The sheets are 100% cotton with a wool-mix duvet inner. An extra wool blanket is also provided to keep you warm.

  • The kitchen has a bench, a small fridge/freezer and a gas 4-hob cooktop and oven available for cooking. There is also a kettle, a stovetop pyramid toaster and a knife block set. You'll find all the pots, pans, crockery, cutlery and utensils you'll need to cook. Hot water is supplied by a gas califont.

Some pantry basics are supplied - olive oil, salt, pepper, plunger coffee, instant coffee, a selection of teas, milo and sugar.

  • The bathroom has a luxurious large hot shower, flushing toilet and bathroom vanity. There is also a wood-fired hot tub on the deck.

    Towels and robes are provided.

  • Moonlight Peak is fully off-grid with a high spec solar system providing electricity. If it’s sunny, the system will be generating power. If it’s not sunny, you’ll be using power from the bank of batteries. While there should be plenty of electricity for your stay, you will need to conserve to avoid running out. Some small appliances, especially hairdryers and straighteners, have a large power draw so use should be avoided.

  • There is good mobile phone reception at the cabin and WIFI is also available. Phones and devices can be charged using the power points provided in the cabin.

  • You'll be transported to the cabin by 4WD on arrival and collected on departure. Your vehicle will be parked at the base of the hill on the property.

It is possible to walk down to your car and back up again to the cabin if you want to do a day trip, however please note this is a 35-minute downhill walk and an hour back up to the cabin. The hill is very steep so this will be a challenging uphill walk. It is a 300-metre incline over 1.5km.

  • The hut has a wood burner for heating (with plenty of firewood). There is also a heater in the bedroom for cooler nights.

  • Be prepared for anything! The cabin is on the edge of the Tararua Ranges and very exposed to the weather. Winds can reach 120km per hour at times and snowfall in winter is not unusual. Note that in extreme conditions, you may not be able to use the hot tub.

If you find the conditions mean you need to hunker down inside - light the fire, get cosy and watch the spectacular weather from the comfort of your solid cabin.

  • Moonlight Peak is perfect for winter stays, but bear in mind that this is an off-grid cabin powered by solar and heated via a wood burner. You'll need to be careful of power usage and brush up on your fire-lighting skills!

  • The hot tub is filled with fresh water prior to your arrival. It's wood-fired, so you'll need to light this when you arrive and stoke it for at least a couple of hours while it heats through. It takes a little bit of skill with lighting fires and patience.

Please bear in mind when booking that it won't be ready to jump into as soon as you arrive.

  • Moonlight Peak is not suitable for children and is a strictly adults-only site.

If you're looking for a safe family-friendly glamping site, select the family icon in the search bar on our 'find your escape' page to easily find them.

  • Moonlight Peak has a 'no dog' policy.

If you're looking for dog-friendly glamping, check out some of our other Canopy Camping Escapes sites that welcome dogs - you can select the 'dog-friendly' filter in the search bar to easily find them.

  • Moonlight Peak is set just outside Carterton in the Wairarapa, so while it's not very remote - it is very private! It's just you and the amazing view.

  • Access to Moonlight Peak is a 10-minute drive on a steep farm track to the top of the hill. You'll need to be transported up the hill by your hosts and once you've been dropped off - you'll be there until your hosts arrive to collect you on the day of departure (unless you choose to walk down and back up the hill again - a steep walk!). Your car will be safely parked in the parking area at the bottom of the hill for the duration of your stay.

You will receive a pre-arrival email with your host's details 5-days prior to your stay so you can liaise regarding arrival and departure times.

For health and safety reasons, guests will not be able to drive their own 4WD vehicles up to the cabin.

  • • Food and drink - make sure you bring all the food and drink you need for your stay

    • Toiletries

    • Warm clothing for cooler evenings

  • The cabin is set on a farm, so for the safety of all concerned, it’s very important to follow the safety guidelines and terms that you’ll find in our booking terms and in your Welcome Guide on site. These terms and guidelines include:

    • Visitors stay at their own risk, the property has hazards both farm-related (ie. machinery and animals) and natural.
